Train Crash in India Claims 207 Lives

A train accident in the Balasore region of India’s province has left 233 people dead and over 900 injured. The accident involved three trains, two of which were passenger trains, belonging to Coromandel Express and Yashwatpur-Howrah Express, and one was freight. The accident occurred at 19.20 local time on Tuesday near the Bahanaga Bazar Train Station. Currently, there are more than 600 passengers still trapped, and hospitalization of the 179 injured is underway. Senior officials in the state of Orissa dispatched 75 ambulances, over 500 police and rescue teams, to the accident, and local people have also supported the rescue efforts. After the accident, 34 train services were canceled. The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, shared his condolences on Twitter, saying he “shared the grief of the families who lost their loved ones,” and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated he met with the Minister of Railways to offer support to those involved. Reports indicate that 50 died, and over 300 people were injured in the accident.
