Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor Coordination Platform Launched in Astana
Astana hosted the launch of a coordination platform for the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) on June 12, aiming to enhance connectivity and cooperation along the corridor. The platform brings together donors, investors, stakeholders, and beneficiaries involved in the TITR, including the five Central Asian states, the European Commission, European Union (EU) member states, and international financial institutions.
Kazakh Minister of Transport Marat Karabayev highlighted the importance of an efficient transport system, with Kazakhstan serving as a key crossroads for trade routes. The TITR connects China with Europe, passing through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, with cargo transportation reaching 2.75 million tons in 2023.
The event emphasized the need for timely investments to develop the transport corridor, with the European Commission’s Henrik Hololei noting the strategic importance of the TITR in the Global Gateway strategy. The platform aims to mobilize investments for infrastructure projects along the route, with an estimated 18.5 billion euros needed for completion.
Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko stressed the urgency of delivering commitments to develop the corridor, emphasizing the long-term implications for sustainable development and peace in Central Asia and the South Caucasus. The platform’s six-month plan includes project facilitation support and expert workshops, with long-term initiatives to support trade facilitation and digitalization.
Overall, the coordination platform for the TITR demonstrates a collaborative effort to improve transport infrastructure, strengthen economic ties, and promote sustainable development in the region. The EU’s support and engagement with Central Asia highlight the commitment to enhancing connectivity and prosperity through the modernization of transport corridors.
