Transcarpathian Hungarians advocate for Hungary’s weapon delivery to Ukraine

The sociology department of the National University of Ungvár (Uzshorod) in Transcarpathia, Ukraine, has recently conducted a survey in collaboration with Smartpol agency to understand the perspectives of the Hungarian community residing in the region regarding the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine. According to rtl.hu, the opinions of Transcarpathian Hungarians differ from those of their compatriots in Hungary. It is worth noting that the interviewers conducted the surveys in Hungarian, ensuring the representativeness of the results.

The survey revealed that 71.4 percent of Transcarpathian Hungarians believe that Russia bears responsibility for the war, whereas in Hungary, this figure stands at only 54 percent. Furthermore, 67.3 percent of the local Hungarians agreed that Russia poses a threat to peace, while in Hungary, only 48 percent share this view. Interestingly, over 53 percent of the respondents expressed support for Hungary providing weapons to Ukraine, with only 28.8 percent opposing this idea. The study involved 510 Hungarian participants and the interviews were carried out between July 2 and July 5 in 18 different localities.

In other news, the upcoming 32nd Baile Tusnad Summer University, taking place in central Romania’s Tusnádfürdő from July 18 to 23, will explore various topics, including Hungarian-Polish friendship. The Waclaw Felczak Foundation will be organizing two panel discussions during the event. On July 19, Bishop of Szeged-Csanád László Kiss-Rigó, historian and sociologist Imre Molnár, philosopher David Lloyd Dusenbury, and others will discuss the theme “Europe either will be Christian or won’t be,” with Gergely Mohay, head of the foundation, serving as the moderator. On July 20, Michal Kwilecki from the Hungarian-Polish Friendship Society of Wroclaw, Jacek Karnowski, editor-in-chief of Sieci weekly, and Attila Demko of Mathias Corvinus Collegium’s Geopolitics Workshop will discuss security policy in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war, titled “Trust God and keep the gunpowder dry,” moderated by Mihaly Rosonczy-Kovács. Karol Biernacki, chairman of the board of trustees of the Waclaw Felczak Foundation, and his deputy, Robert Zobolyak, are also expected to attend the event.
