Treasury Cracks Down on Tax Dodgers

The Tax Inspection Board (VDK) of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance is cracking down on tax evasion and informal economy activities in Turkey. Minister Mehmet Şimşek has emphasized the importance of increasing justice and efficiency in taxes, collecting more taxes from those who earn more, and improving budget financing by combating the informal economy.

As part of their investigation, the Board has identified individuals who spent over 5 million lira per month but did not declare any income or pay taxes. These individuals were found to be living luxurious lifestyles, driving expensive cars, and engaging in lavish consumption without proper tax declarations.

Tax inspectors are now closely monitoring these individuals to determine the source of their income and ensure they pay their fair share of taxes. Some individuals were found to have monthly expenses exceeding 10 million lira, prompting further scrutiny from the authorities.

In addition, the VDK is keeping a close eye on businesses that collect payments via IBAN without issuing receipts or invoices. Account holders who receive payments through IBAN are being questioned to verify the source of their income. Those found to be allowing others to use their accounts for illicit activities will be subject to legal action.

Furthermore, the Board is examining the “mail order” method used in sectors such as service, e-commerce, and furniture sales. Collections made through this method are being monitored for potential tax risks, especially in cases where no invoices or receipts are issued for the goods or services sold.

Overall, the VDK is committed to enforcing tax laws, increasing transparency in financial transactions, and combatting tax evasion in order to strengthen the country’s economy and ensure fairness for all taxpayers.
