TRNC President Tatar’s Fight for Basic Human Rights
President Tatar of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus recently discussed their new peace initiatives for the island during his visit to New York for the 79th United Nations General Assembly meetings. In a press release at New York Turkevi, Tatar emphasized the need for a realistic approach to achieve a sustainable solution in Cyprus where both states can coexist in good neighborly relations and cooperation.
Tatar highlighted the importance of moving towards a future based on prosperity and stability, urging for thinking outside the box rather than sticking to exhausted negotiation frameworks. He expressed his desire to collaborate with the Greek Cypriot side on various projects, including hydrocarbon investments, water initiatives, and addressing the migration crisis.
During his meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Tatar reiterated his commitment to a negotiated solution and discussed the principles of equality and cooperation between the two sides. He also expressed readiness to engage in dialogue with the Greek Cypriot side on a sovereign and equal platform.
President Tatar condemned human rights violations against the people of Cyprus and called for an end to the unjust isolation that has been imposed on the Turkish Cypriot community for the past 60 years. He criticized the behavior of the Greek Cypriot leader and highlighted the need to address issues such as detaining investors and restricting travel, which hinder efforts for a result-oriented dialogue.
Tatar expressed gratitude to President Erdogan for his statements on Cyprus during the UN General Assembly, particularly highlighting the importance of recognizing the TRNC and intensifying diplomatic, economic, and social relations with the Turkish Cypriot people. He echoed Erdogan’s stance on the unfeasibility of a federal solution and emphasized the TRNC’s de facto self-governing status for over six decades.
In the face of regional conflicts and threats, Tatar underscored the need for the TRNC to have a greater voice in international affairs to ensure a more just world.
