TRNC Set to Take New Measures for Closed Maraş

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, Fikri Ataoğlu, announced plans for new initiatives regarding the “Closed Maraş” area, which was partially opened to the public four years ago. Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, also discussed the issue during his recent visit to Turkey. Ataoğlu highlighted the success of the initiative, stating that Maraş has attracted over 2 million visitors since its opening in October 2020, making a significant contribution to the economy of both the Famagusta district and the entire Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Ataoğlu expressed gratitude to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the support provided by Turkey in opening up Maraş to visitors. He emphasized that the region, once known as “Closed Maraş,” is now accessible to visitors during specific hours of the day, signaling a shift in perception. The Minister mentioned that they are gearing up to implement further measures to enhance the region’s economic impact.

During his recent visit to Turkey, Ataoğlu met with Minister Kurum to discuss potential new steps regarding Maraş. He proposed a joint visit to the area to assess the situation firsthand and collaborate on future actions. Ataoğlu reiterated the TRNC’s commitment to enhancing Maraş’s economic role while ensuring its sovereignty over the region.

The initiative to open Maraş was first approved by the Council of Ministers in June 2019, with subsequent phases gradually expanding public access to the area. Despite opposition from the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, the TRNC remains steadfast in its determination to assert control over Maraş and maximize its economic potential.

As discussions continue on the future of Maraş, the government of TRNC emphasizes the importance of collaboration with Turkey to chart a sustainable path forward for the region’s development and economic growth.
