The newspaper reported that anonymous sources revealed that the university had received a letter from the White House task force, which mandated certain requests be met.
The sources disclosed that the Trump administration is reportedly unhappy with Harvard’s response to the demands and is considering cutting the $1 billion fund allocated for health research. In response, Harvard’s management has decided to comply with the federal government’s requests in order to avoid the funding cut, following a more lenient approach compared to Columbia University.
It was reported by two American officials to the New York Times that the White House task force sent a letter on April 11 to Harvard, sparking further tensions between the university and the administration. Disagreements within the White House regarding the letter were highlighted, with some officials indicating early knowledge of its content while others expressed opposition to its distribution.
The Trump administration has threatened to freeze federal funds for several universities, citing reasons such as campus protests and diversity programs.
