Trump Orders Tariffs and Sanctions Against Colombia
US President Donald Trump has taken a bold stance against Colombia after the country refused to allow planes carrying Colombian immigrants deported from the USA to land on their soil. Trump ordered tariffs and sanctions to be imposed on Colombia, citing national security concerns. The President shared his decision on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro for refusing to accept the return of Colombian immigrants, whom he described as “fugitive criminals.” The US President announced that he will impose a 25 percent customs duty on all goods entering the United States from Colombia, with plans to increase it to 50 percent within a week.
In addition to trade measures, Trump ordered travel bans and visa cancellations for Colombian government officials, allies, and supporters. He also called for increased inspections for Colombian citizens and cargo for security reasons, along with treasury and financial sanctions.
The dispute stems from Colombia’s refusal to accept planes carrying deported Colombian immigrants from the USA. In response, Petro argued that the USA must establish a dignified protocol for handling immigrants before they can be accepted into Colombian territory.
The US administration has been systematically implementing stricter immigration policies, with recent measures including the abolition of the “CBP One” application for legal immigration and increased enforcement actions by ICE forces. Trump’s latest actions against Colombia reflect his commitment to securing the US-Mexico border and cracking down on irregular immigration.
