Hungary’s Hopes for Special US Trade Deal Dashed by Trump’s EU Bloc Stand
Hungary’s aspirations for a unique trade agreement with the United States have been shattered as President Donald Trump confirmed that his administration will only negotiate with the European Union as a single bloc. This decision deals a blow to Prime Minister Orbán’s diplomatic strategy.
According to reports from Blikk, the Hungarian government had been eager to secure a special trade deal with the US, leveraging the close relationship between Orbán and Trump. However, Trump made it clear during a cabinet meeting that the US sees the EU as one entity for trade negotiations, despite the individual character of each member state.
Hungarian officials had been optimistic about the possibility of a special arrangement with the US, given Orbán’s early endorsement of Trump and their pre-election meetings. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had even claimed that the EU had failed to engage the US in trade talks, though evidence suggests otherwise. The European Commission had reportedly offered to eliminate tariffs, a proposal that was rejected by the Trump administration as insufficient.
In the broader context of Trump’s trade agenda, China is facing harsher measures. The president recently announced a 90-day tariff freeze for non-retaliatory countries, while imposing a 10 percent tariff during this period. However, China is experiencing even tougher actions, with tariffs now reaching 145 percent, including a significant increase on the opioid fentanyl. Trump justified these measures by accusing China of disregarding global market rules, highlighting his administration’s protectionist approach.
As Hungary’s hopes for a special trade deal with the US fade, the country will need to reassess its diplomatic strategies and look for opportunities within the framework of the EU bloc negotiations.
