The Mayor of Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk, Dr. Fatma Çimen Tuğlu, addressed the recent claims of sewage flowing into Bafra Public Beach during a press conference, aiming to address and clarify the situation.
At the press conference, İbrahim Köroğlu, Inspector of the Department of Basic Health Services, refuted the notion that the algae found in the stream near the beach was a result of sewage overflow from the treatment plant. Köroğlu emphasized that the algae should not be conflated with sewage and highlighted that the Ministry of Health conducts monthly seawater sampling, which confirmed the cleanliness of the region in question as of June 14th.
Mayor Fatma Çimen Tuğlu also condemned the spread of malicious news, emphasizing the significance of Bafra Public Beach for both the municipal authorities and the region as a whole. She explained that efforts to address the lagoon issue in the area began in February, acknowledging the presence of algae formations due to seasonal factors such as rising temperatures and decreasing water levels in the Mehmetçik pond.
Addressing concerns about water pollution, Tuğlu stated that periodic cleaning activities are carried out to remove the algae from the stagnant pond. She emphasized that the layer found in the Mehmetçik pond was solely attributable to the growth of algae and not due to pollution.
Tuğlu highlighted that the recent sampling on June 14th revealed clean beaches from Bafra to Karpaz, further strengthening the evidence against the allegations. The mayor has initiated legal action against the dissemination of false news pertaining to the matter.
It is essential to note that the clarification provided by the Mayor and the verification of water quality through official sampling on multiple occasions indicate that Bafra Public Beach remains free from sewage contamination. Efforts to address the lagoon issue, including the management of algae formation, continue to be undertaken by the municipality to ensure the preservation of the area’s natural beauty and ecological health.
