Türk-İş releases minimum wage expectations

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission is set to begin its discussions on Monday, December 11, and all eyes are on the outcome of the negotiations. Türk-İş, the labor union representing workers at the bargaining table, has stated that they will start the negotiations at 14,025 liras, which is the declared hunger limit for a family of four.

Türk-İş Chairman Ergün Atalay emphasized that the minimum wage should be set above this figure, as the current wage is not sufficient for people to survive, especially with the ongoing increase in the cost of living and inflation.

“Atalay stated, ‘There is no bargaining beyond the hunger line.’ We will be negotiating based on this limit,” he added.

Similarly, Hak-İş Chairman Mahmut Arslan stressed the importance of considering the cost of a family of four when determining the minimum wage for 2024. He emphasized the need for a minimum wage that meets the basic needs of a working family of four, taking into account high inflation and welfare share.

The news comes after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan both indicated that there will be a single increase in the minimum wage next year. Currently set at 11,402 liras, the new minimum wage will be announced by the end of December.

The outcome of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission’s meeting and the subsequent negotiations will have significant implications for workers and their families across the country. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
