Turkey Continues Mediation Efforts Between Ethiopia and Somalia
In a bid to resolve the conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia, Turkish Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reached out to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for support. Turkey, known for its trustworthiness by both countries, has been actively involved in mediating talks between the two nations.
Following Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s visit to Ethiopia and subsequent discussions with Somali officials, it was decided to advance the second round of talks to be held in Ankara on August 12 instead of the previously scheduled date of September 2.
It is believed that the upcoming discussions in Ankara will focus on finding a compromise that considers the needs, concerns, and interests of both Somalia and Ethiopia. The aim is to reach a peaceful resolution to the conflict through diplomatic means.
Turkey’s mediation efforts began after Prime Minister Ahmed’s letter requesting assistance. Foreign Minister Fidan engaged in dialogues with both Ethiopian and Somali counterparts, leading to a joint statement expressing the parties’ commitment to resolving the dispute peacefully.
The conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia stems from Ethiopia’s pursuit of access to the Red Sea, primarily through agreements with Somaliland. This move has sparked criticism from Somalia and the international community, leading to escalating tensions in the region.
Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to resolve the crisis, Turkey’s intervention has been praised for opening a sustainable dialogue channel between the conflicting parties. As the second round of talks approaches, hopes for a peaceful resolution remain high.
