Turkey’s Raw Milk Production Drops by 7.1% in 2022
According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, the country’s raw milk production forecast for 2022 has decreased by 7.1 percent, from a record of 23 million 200 thousand 306 tons in 2021, to 21 million 563 thousand 492 tons in 2022. Compared to the previous year, buffalo milk production declined the most by 31.5 percent, followed by goat milk production, which decreased by 13.2 percent, cow milk production decreased by 6.8 percent, while sheep milk production declined by 6.7 percent.
The report also indicated that last year, 92.3 percent of raw milk production was cow’s milk, while 4.9 percent was sheep’s milk, 2.5 percent was goat’s milk, and the remaining 0.2 percent was buffalo milk.
This development may have significant effects on various sectors of the country’s economy, such as the dairy industry, as a decrease in raw milk production leads to a decrease in the production of dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and butter.
The factors contributing to the decline in raw milk production were not mentioned in the report, but it can be speculated that the country’s economic downturn, dwindling grazing lands, and climate change may have played a role in the decline.
