Turkey Assumes Command of NATO Standing Mine Countermeasures Task Group-2

In a ceremonial event held at the Mine Fleet Command in Erdek, Turkey has officially taken over the command of the NATO Standing Mine Countermeasures (MKT) Task Group-2 (SNMCMG-2) from Romania. This task group is responsible for coordinating NATO’s naval operations and training activities for mine warfare in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Aegean regions.

Naval Colonel Kürşat Kurnaz has assumed command of SNMCMG-2, marking Turkey’s 7th time leading this multinational force. During the ceremony, Colonel Kurnaz received the SNMCMG-2 Commodore’s badge and signed the handover document, symbolizing the transition of leadership from Colonel Sebastian Barote of the Romanian Naval Forces Command.

NATO Chief of Allied Naval Forces Operations, Rear Admiral Stefan Pauly, expressed gratitude towards Colonel Barote for his leadership and welcomed Colonel Kurnaz as the new commander. He emphasized the importance of collaboration within the alliance for ensuring operational excellence and collective security.

Colonel Kurnaz acknowledged the honor and responsibility of leading such a dedicated and competent force. He pledged to fulfill his duties with professionalism and commitment to NATO values, emphasizing the importance of unity in strengthening the alliance.

Former Commander, Colonel Barote, praised the Turkish authorities for organizing a remarkable ceremony and expressed confidence in Colonel Kurnaz’s leadership. He highlighted the operational capabilities of SNMCMG-2 and the importance of working together for maritime security and defense.
