Turkey-themed Iftar Program Held in Trafalgar Square, London
The “Ramadan Tent Project” event, a tradition in the UK, recently hosted approximately 2 thousand individuals of various religions and beliefs at a “Turkey” themed iftar event in the capital’s famous square. The event, sponsored by the Communication Presidency, was attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to London Osman Koray Ertaş, Westminster Mayor Robert Rigby, and Omar Salha, the founder of the Ramadan Tent Project.
The evening began with a prayer on a platform in the square, followed by a communal iftar meal and prayers. Participants were also given Turkish Delight and a Bayram Greeting note in red cloth bags. The program also included performances by vocal and instrumental artists under the title “Mystical Sounds from Anatolia”, supported by the London Yunus Emre Institute.
Ambassador Ertaş highlighted the importance of Ramadan in promoting unity, solidarity, and empathy, especially towards those in need. He emphasized the significance of remembering communities in conflict-ridden regions such as Palestine and Sudan and spreading messages of peace and unity.
Westminster Mayor Rigby praised the diversity and inclusivity of the Westminster region, emphasizing the importance of events like the Open Iftar Program in fostering connections and sharing cultural traditions. Salha, the founder of the Ramadan Tent Project, highlighted the importance of open iftar activities in bridging communities and expressing gratitude towards sponsors such as the Presidency of Overseas Turks and Relative Communities, Islamic Relief, and Yunus Emre Institute.
The program aims to bring people of different backgrounds together to celebrate the spirit of Ramadan and foster a sense of unity and inclusivity. The participants, including Hodan Omar, expressed their appreciation for the event’s ability to bring people together in the iconic Trafalgar Square and spread the essence of Ramadan in London.
