Turkey’s Embassy in Damascus Reopens After 12-Year Closure
After being closed in 2012 during the Assad regime, Turkey’s Embassy in Damascus has been reopened today following the overthrow of the regime. The Turkish flag was hoisted at the embassy, signaling the resumption of embassy activities.
Turkey’s Ambassador to Nouakchott, Burhan Köroğlu, has been appointed as the Temporary Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy in Damascus. In a speech before the flag-raising ceremony, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his commitment to supporting the Syrian people in the reconstruction and recovery of Syria.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan announced the reopening of the Damascus Embassy in a live broadcast, highlighting the appointment of Burhan Köroğlu as the Chargé d’Affaires. Fidan confirmed that the delegation, including Köroğlu and his team, set out for Damascus on Thursday to make the embassy operational.
The new administration in Syria, a continuation of the “Syrian Liberation Government” in Idlib, expressed gratitude to countries reopening their embassies in Damascus and specifically mentioned Turkey among them.
Additionally, MİT President İbrahim Kalın visited Damascus on December 12 and paid a visit to the Umayyad Mosque, indicating Turkey’s expanding regional influence.
The reopening of Turkey’s Embassy in Damascus marks a significant development in the diplomatic relations between Turkey and Syria, paving the way for enhanced cooperation and support for the Syrian people in the post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
