Turkey’s 2053 Vision: Energy-Producing Buildings

Green Energy Workshop Highlights Renewable Energy Initiatives in Turkey

The "Green Energy Workshop," organized by Trakya University Institute of Science and Technology, took place at the Balkan Congress Center, focusing on sustainable energy solutions for buildings.

During the event, Murat Bayram, the Deputy General Manager of Vocational Services at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanism, and Climate Change, delivered a key presentation on the "Energy Identity Certificate." This certificate has been in use since 2011 to monitor energy consumption in buildings, ensuring adherence to renewable energy standards.

The Energy Identity Certificate provides crucial information about a building’s energy consumption classification, insulation features, and the efficiency of heating or cooling systems. Bayram noted the significance of data collected over the years, stating, "Turkey has approximately 1.5 million buildings in our database, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of energy usage patterns."

He emphasized the importance of buildings producing their own energy to achieve sustainability in the energy sector. Bayram outlined the current status of renewable energy use in Turkish buildings, revealing that only 6.45% of structures utilize renewable sources.

He further stressed that the ultimate goal is to reach "zero-energy buildings." Reflecting on past trends, he mentioned that in the 2000s, the average annual electricity consumption for a building was around 180 kilowatt-hours. Presently, any building over 2,000 square meters must incorporate at least 10% renewable energy use to obtain a usage permit.

The workshop underscored the urgent need for innovative approaches to energy consumption in construction, setting the stage for Turkey’s ongoing transition toward a more sustainable future.
