Fishery Production Increases in Turkey

Turkey’s Statistical Institute has released their fisheries statistics for 2022, indicating a 6.2 percent increase in fishery production compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 849,808 tons. Sea fish made up 30 percent of total production, with 5.6 percent coming from other sea products, 3.9 percent from inland fishery products, and aquaculture products accounting for 60.6 percent.

There was a 2.1 percent increase in the fisheries sector during the same period. Total production by hunting amounted to 335,003 tons, while aquaculture production reached 514,805 tons. Seafood catches increased by 2.3 percent compared to the previous year, while inland fisheries increased by 0.4 percent.

Anchovy caught the highest amount in the seas, with 125,980 tons, followed by bonito-torik with 49,892 tons and sardines with 16,729 tons. Production through aquaculture also increased by 9.1 percent in 2022, with 368,742 tons taking place in the seas and 146,063 tons in inland waters. The most important fish species grown were trout with 145,649 tons in inland waters, sea bass with 156,602 tons, and sea bream with 152,469 tons in the seas.

This steady growth in fishery production is promising for Turkey’s economy and their efforts to sustainably manage their fisheries sector.
