Silifke District Celebrates Turkey’s First Astronaut Alper Gezeravcı’s Journey to Space

As the Dragon spacecraft, carrying the AX-3 mission and Turkey’s first astronaut Alper Gezeravcı, was launched into space, the people of Silifke in Mersin’s Silifke district gathered to celebrate and support their fellow countryman.

With banners saying ‘Alper Gezeravcı, the pride of our Silifke’ and ‘Yörük child is going to space’, the citizens of Silifke sent their prayers and well wishes for Gezeravcı’s successful journey into space.

Watching the historic moment unfold on LED screens in Silifke’s Göksu Park, the people of Silifke lit torches and recorded the event with their mobile phones. The program held in Göksu Park was attended by Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, Silifke District Governor Abdullah Aslaner, Silifke Mayor Sadık Altunok and Silifke residents.

Governor Pehlivan expressed the pride felt by all 85 million citizens of Turkey, particularly in Mersin and Silifke, for Gezeravcı’s achievement. He highlighted the significance of this moment not only for the people of Silifke but for all the children and young people in Turkey, as it opens the door to future studies in the field of science and technology.

As the clock struck 00.49 TSI and the Dragon spacecraft was launched into space, the excitement reached its peak, with the people of Silifke sending off Gezeravcı with the slogan “Turkey is proud of you.”

The event was marked by performances from the Silifke Municipality Folk Dance Teams, adding to the celebratory atmosphere as the district came together to support and celebrate the historic moment for Turkey and its space program.
