Turkish Constitutional Court Celebrates 62nd Anniversary

The Constitutional Court of Turkey is set to mark its 62nd Anniversary with a series of events and ceremonies. The President of the Court, Kadir Özkaya, will lead a delegation to visit Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, tomorrow as part of the commemorative activities.

One of the main highlights of the celebrations will be the oath ceremony for Ömer Çınar, who was recently elected as a member of the Supreme Court. This ceremony will take place during the Anniversary Ceremony of the Constitutional Court.

The establishment of the Supreme Court dates back to the 1961 Constitution, which outlined the duties and powers of the Constitutional Court in Articles 145-152. The Law on the Establishment and Trial Procedures of the Constitutional Court was passed on April 22, 1962, and came into effect on April 25, 1962.

Since its inception on April 25, 1962, the Constitutional Court has been responsible for deciding on individual applications, political party closure cases, Supreme Court trials, and norm review applications. Over the years, the Court has played a crucial role in upholding the rule of law in the country.

In recent years, the right of individual application to the Constitutional Court has become a beacon of hope for many people seeking justice. Between September 23, 2012, and April 22, 2024, over 600,000 individual applications were made to the Court, with more than 500,000 cases being concluded.

The Court has also been active in conducting norm audits, with a total of 1815 applications received between 2012 and 2023. In 2023 alone, the Court decided on 88 annulment cases and 141 objection applications, with a significant number of cases being annulled or rejected.

As the Constitutional Court continues to uphold the principles of justice and democracy in Turkey, the upcoming Anniversary Ceremony will serve as a reminder of the vital role that the Court plays in safeguarding the rights of the citizens.
