Turkish Cypriots in England Protest UN Decision on Cyprus Peacekeepers
Turkish Cypriots living in England recently gathered in London to protest the United Nations Security Council’s decision to send peacekeepers to Cyprus. The decision, numbered 186 and dated March 4, 1964, has sparked controversy among the Turkish Cypriot community.
Under the leadership of the British Turkish Cypriot Associations Council and the non-governmental organization Embargoed, Turkish Cypriots voiced their concerns in front of the British Parliament. They argued that the decision has isolated the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and called for its withdrawal.
Kenan Yaman, President of the Council of Turkish Cypriot Associations of the United Kingdom, emphasized that the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus has infringed upon the rights of Turkish Cypriots and imposed an embargo on the TRNC based on the UN decision. Yaman urged for a revision or withdrawal of the decision, stating that it is a major obstacle in resolving the Cyprus issue.
Yaman also expressed Turkish Cypriots’ preference for a two-state solution on the island and highlighted the importance of direct flights to the TRNC. He emphasized that the current embargo hinders direct trade with the TRNC, making it crucial to lift such restrictions for the well-being of the Turkish Cypriot community.
The protest in London serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots in the UK and their unwavering commitment to finding a resolution to the Cyprus issue based on equality and mutual respect.
