Turkish Parliament Drafting Digital Copyright Law; Google to Face Digital Mediums Commission

New Digital Copyright Law Under Discussion in Turkey

In Turkey, the issue of digital copyright has taken center stage as publishers have not been paid by search engines and digital platforms, particularly Google. To address this issue, the Digital Media Commission was formed under the leadership of AK Party Hatay Deputy Hüseyin Yayman, and discussions on the “Digital Copyright Law” have commenced in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

The commission, which recently held its first meeting, is set to reconvene on June 25 to focus on the Digital Copyright Law. Google officials will be presenting their perspectives and insights to the commission. Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Ömer Fatih Sayan, emphasized the importance of updating the laws to protect the copyrights of content producers.

In addition to the Digital Copyright Law, Turkey is working on a Crypto Assets Bill that is crucial for the country’s standing in the global financial system. The bill aims to regulate crypto asset transactions in accordance with international standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). It is expected that the bill will be prioritized in the Turkish Parliament’s agenda after the Eid holiday.

The country’s position on the global stage, especially in terms of its handling of cryptocurrency transactions and compliance with anti-money laundering regulations, is under scrutiny. Turkey aims to improve its standing and avoid being listed on the FATF “gray” list through strengthened regulations and enforcement mechanisms.

As the discussions and legislative processes continue, both investors and service providers in the cryptocurrency market are urged to comply with the new regulations to avoid legal penalties. The regulations will also ensure the protection of customers’ assets and prevent any potential misuse of crypto assets for illicit activities.

Overall, the ongoing discussions on digital copyright and crypto assets laws in Turkey signify the country’s commitment to staying updated and aligned with international standards in the digital economy and financial sectors.
