Turkistan Designated as Special Cultural Heritage Site

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has officially granted special status to Turkistan, solidifying its position as Kazakhstan’s spiritual and cultural center. The law, signed by President Tokayev, emphasizes the importance of preserving Turkistan’s historical and cultural significance, particularly the revered Khoja Ahmed Yasawi mausoleum.
Turkistan, known as the cradle of the Kazakh nation, holds a special place in the hearts of the Kazakh people. The Khoja Ahmed Yasawi mausoleum, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a symbol of the region’s rich history and cultural heritage. By safeguarding this sacred site, Kazakhstan not only honors its own history but also contributes to the preservation of global culture and history.
The newly enacted law includes measures to protect and maintain historical landmarks in Turkistan. It outlines guidelines for archaeological and restoration activities, promotes the revival of traditional crafts and cultural heritage, and imposes restrictions on construction in protected areas to preserve the city’s unique architectural style.
In addition, the law mandates the creation of an archaeological reserve, the development of accessible infrastructure for individuals with disabilities, and the implementation of inclusive tourism initiatives. Furthermore, a unified city design code will ensure the preservation of Turkistan’s architectural character.
Local government authorities will be granted expanded powers to manage the region effectively, while artisans will receive state support to preserve traditional crafts. The law also addresses transportation regulations, strikes a balance between historical conservation and tourism development, and aims to enhance the overall quality of life in Turkistan.
With the granting of special status to Turkistan, Kazakhstan reaffirms its commitment to protecting its cultural heritage and historical legacy, ensuring that future generations can continue to cherish and appreciate the unique significance of this sacred city.
