Turkmen Horse Breed Show and Championship at Bábolna

The European Championship and equestrian show of Akhal-Teke breed of Steppe horses from Turkmenistan took place last weekend in Bábolna, northern Hungary. Minister of Agriculture István Nagy emphasized the importance of preserving this endangered breed, which is considered the ancestor of many popular horse breeds. The Akhal-Teke was listed as an endangered agricultural animal breed in Hungary in 2020.

In his speech, Minister Nagy highlighted the historical significance of horse breeding in their national values and stated that the government supports equestrian sports, events, training of young horses, and the work of stud farms as public bodies. Maintaining protected indigenous and endangered breeds is vital for preserving the genetic basis of livestock breeding.

József Nyéki, president of the Hungarian Akhal-Teke Horse Breeding Association, mentioned that fifty-nine horses from eleven countries participated in the event. The horses were judged based on their walking, cantering, free jumping, movement, and dressage by a three-member jury.

The Akhal-Teke breed is one of the oldest cultivated species globally, originating from the Turkmen Teke tribe and the Ahal Region. Known for their resilience in harsh conditions, these horses have a bloodline inherited from the most durable species. The Turkmen consider them a national treasure.

Although the conscious use of Akhal-Teke in Hungarian horse breeding declined in the past, efforts have been made to revive and increase the stock in recent years. The golden-coated Akhal-Teke is recognized for its unique appearance, with its metallic sheen caused by the transparent center of its hair acting as an ‘optical fiber.’

The equestrian event showcased the beauty and grace of these magnificent horses, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting the Akhal-Teke breed. The dedication of breeders and support from the government are crucial in safeguarding this endangered and culturally significant horse breed for future generations.
