Turkmenistan’s Role in CIS Integration Projects
The CIS and Turkmenistan: Cooperation and Integration
Turkmenistan plays an important role in the integration projects of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In an exclusive interview with MIR TV channel, CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev expressed the nation’s active participation in various collaboration areas within the Commonwealth.
Addressing the misrepresentation of Turkmenistan’s role in the media, Lebedev emphasized that the country is indeed a member of the Commonwealth and actively contributes to its affairs, refuting any inaccurate claims.
Turkmenistan holds the status of an associate member within the CIS, a recognition that stems from its declared policy of permanent neutrality, acknowledged by the United Nations. This unique status does not hinder its active participation in integration projects. In particular, Turkmenistan has taken on the role of chairing the Commonwealth several times, successfully hosting critical events aimed at strengthening cooperation and friendship among member states.
From a political, humanitarian, and economic standpoint, Turkmenistan has been actively engaged within the Commonwealth, with various initiatives voiced by the Turkmen leadership, driving cooperation forward. The country’s emphasis on regional cooperation is also evident in its hosting of the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia.
Furthermore, Turkmenistan has been active in promoting cultural exchanges and sports diplomacy within the CIS. Hosting events such as the “Cultural Capitals of the CIS” in the cities of Mary and Dashoguz, and demonstrating a commitment to school sports development, have contributed to closer ties among member states.
Economically, Turkmenistan has played a significant role in shaping the CIS Economic Development Strategy, leveraging its strategic geographical location to drive the development of key transport corridors that benefit the entire Commonwealth.
Looking ahead, 2024 marks an important milestone for Turkmenistan with the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Magtymguly Pyragy, a revered figure in Turkmen literature and culture. This event serves as an opportunity to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Turkmen heritage and values across the entire CIS.
Turkmenistan’s active contribution to the CIS underscores its commitment to regional integration and cooperation, paving the way for continued collaboration and mutual understanding within the Commonwealth of Independent States.
