Two Polish Bikers Discover Joy on Frozen Balkhash Lake

Cycling Adventure Across Frozen Lake Balkhash: A Polish Expedition

ASTANA – Picture clear ice stretching endlessly, a sprawling horizon, and the exhilarating feeling of freedom. This is the essence of an unforgettable cycling adventure across the frozen expanse of Lake Balkhash. In February, two Polish cyclists, Ryszard Jakubowski and Jakub Rybicki, embarked on a mission to traverse the entire length of this remarkable lake in just two weeks.

In an interview with The Astana Times, they shared their journey, the obstacles they faced, and the warm interactions with local residents that enriched their experience.

The Unique Features of Lake Balkhash

Lake Balkhash, located in southeastern Kazakhstan, ranks among Central Asia’s largest lakes. Its most intriguing feature is its division: the western section is fresh water, while the eastern part is saline. In winter, the lake freezes entirely, transforming its surface into a sturdy platform suitable for skiing, running, and cycling.

The Journey Begins

Rybicki had long sought out large lakes for cycling adventures, making Lake Balkhash an obvious choice.

“In my search for a frozen lake that was relatively accessible—and one no one had successfully cycled across before—Balkhash stood out,” he explained. Though they didn’t complete the full bike ride, they did so with memorable flair.

As the duo set off from the northern shore near Aktogai, a blanket of thick snow greeted them—a factor they hadn’t fully prepared for.

“Our bikes were primed for ice, but the snow made it difficult, then impossible,” Jakubowski recounted. After struggling to push their bikes over 40-60 kilometers of snow, they had to pivot their plans.

“It was a day of minimal progress; we realized we had to find another route,” Jakubowski said, leading them to opt for cycling on nearby roads instead.

“The snow was the biggest challenge,” Rybicki echoed, adding that extreme temperatures were manageable with the right clothing.

How It All Began

Jakubowski’s passion for cycling evolved from extensive walking journeys through deserts and picturesque trails. His first experience on a bike was in Poland, which led him to pursue longer treks across Europe.

Rybicki, on the other hand, had extensive experience cycling in cold climates, including previous ventures across Siberia’s Lake Baikal. His enjoyment of cycling in frigid conditions defined his approach to adventure travel.

"After crossing the deepest lake in the world, Baikal, we ventured into Greenland for another cycling challenge," Rybicki recalled.

Memorable Experiences

For Jakubowski, the immersive solitude of Lake Balkhash proved to be a highlight. “I loved the solitude and vastness of the lake—sleeping under the stars on a frozen surface was surreal,” he remarked, also noting the challenge presented by a sudden snowstorm during their trip.

Interactions with locals offered enriching moments. One notable encounter was with Andrey, a former soldier who aided them during inclement weather. Their shared history laid the foundation for an engaging conversation.

“We met Polish descendants in Kazakhstan, which brought another layer to our journey,” Jakubowski shared.

Rybicki particularly enjoyed the initial days of cycling. “The vast open spaces and dynamic ice shapes provided a true sense of freedom,” he said, emphasizing the thrill of exploring the lake.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, both cyclists are eager for new ice-cycling adventures. Rybicki is contemplating exploring icy terrains in Canada and Alaska, while Jakubowski is increasingly drawn to the allure of cycling across frozen lakes.

“I’m hooked on ice cycling and can’t wait for the next challenge,” he expressed.

This Polish expedition not only highlighted the beauty of Lake Balkhash but also showcased the spirit of adventure and the bonds formed through shared experiences in unexpected places.
