U.S. Senators Optimistic about Hungary’s NATO Ratification

Three U.S. Senators Visit the U.S. Embassy in Budapest to Discuss NATO and Hungarian Issues
On Sunday, three U.S. senators visited their country’s embassy in Budapest, Hungary, to review strategic issues facing NATO and Hungary. The senators included Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Republican Senator Thom Tillis, and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy. The delegation had also intended to include a fourth member, Democratic Chris Van Hollen, who was unable to attend.
During a press conference at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Senator Jeanne Shaheen highlighted the fact that Hungary is the last NATO member state whose parliament has not yet ratified Sweden’s accession to NATO. However, Senator Shaheen expressed optimism regarding the ratification, citing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s promise to address the issue at the beginning of the spring session of the Hungarian Parliament.
The senators’ visit comes against the backdrop of ongoing discussions about Sweden’s potential NATO membership and its impact on regional security. Senator Chris Murphy emphasized the importance of recognizing the role of supporting Ukraine in ending the war and reaffirmed the ongoing dialogue with Turkey on Sweden’s NATO membership.
Despite their efforts to engage with representatives of the Hungarian government during their visit, the senators expressed regret that they were not received by anyone from the Hungarian government. They had hoped to discuss a range of issues, including bilateral economic relations, the human rights situation, and the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Hungary’s independence and sovereignty while encouraging Hungary, as a member of the NATO family, to support Sweden’s accession to NATO.
Upon their return to the United States, Senator Shaheen and Senator Tillis, as Co-Chairs of the Senate NATO Observer Group, plan to submit a statement assessing the status of Sweden’s NATO accession. The senators’ visit highlights the ongoing dialogue and collaboration between the United States and Hungary on security and strategic issues.
The Hungarian government’s response to requests for meetings with the visiting senators emphasized Hungary’s position as a sovereign country and its commitment to international relations based on mutual respect and non-interference.
The visit by the U.S. senators underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement and dialogue between the United States and its NATO allies, including Hungary, on critical security and strategic issues.
