UK Parliament Urges Government to Recognize Palestine
The International Development Committee of the British Parliament has released a report focusing on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, developments in the West Bank, and the plight of displaced Palestinians. The report highlights the devastating impact of Israel’s response to attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in a significant loss of civilian life and the destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure.
The committee raised concerns about the potential violation of international law in Gaza, stating that there is a reasonable risk that Israel’s military operations could be in breach of international humanitarian law and could lead to accusations of genocide. The report called on the British government to set a timeline for recognizing an independent Palestinian state, emphasizing that such recognition is crucial for achieving lasting peace in the region.
Furthermore, the report noted that there has been a significant decline in the number of aid trucks entering Gaza to meet humanitarian needs, with only an average of 25 trucks entering daily instead of the recommended 500. The report also expressed worries about allegations of Israel targeting civilians with drones following air strikes.
In addition to the situation in Gaza, the report also addressed Israeli actions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It highlighted the destruction of 1800 Palestinian buildings and the killing of 736 Palestinians between October 7, 2023, and October 31, 2024. The report also mentioned that 1722 Palestinians were displaced by Israelis who took over Palestinian lands during the same period.
The committee urged the UK government to ensure that Israel upholds its obligations under international humanitarian law. The findings of the report underscore the urgent need for action to address the humanitarian crisis and promote peace in the region.
