Ultra-Wealthy Hungarian to Construct Costliest Danube Bridge – VISUALS
The proposed new Danube bridge at Mohács is set to be a monumental investment, making it one of the largest infrastructure projects to date. Recently, the evaluation of tenders for the associated public procurement procedure has been made public, revealing exciting details about the new bridge and the individual spearheading its construction.
The contract for the new bridge was awarded to the lowest bidder, Duna Aszfalt, with a tender of HUF 294.96 billion (EUR 750.36 million). Duna Aszfalt is owned by László Szíjj, a prominent figure in the road construction industry and the sixth wealthiest Hungarian according to the 2023 list of richest individuals in the country.
Despite the hefty price tag, which may seem excessive at first glance, Világgazdaság reports that the project encompasses more than just the bridge itself. The construction of a connected road network is also part of the plan.
The construction of the new Danube bridge at Mohács aims to enhance local transportation and integrate Mohács into the national road network. This connectivity is vital for residents who currently rely on a ferry for transportation. Additionally, the bridge will serve as a key route for freight traffic from southern and southeastern neighboring countries, diverting significant truck flows from the Baja Bridge.
Scheduled to be completed by summer 2028, the new bridge is expected to coincide with the “Mohács 500” program, which marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács.
