UMC Transplants Provide Hope for Patients in Need

Three patients in need of organ transplants were given a new lease on life thanks to the generosity of a 44-year-old woman who tragically suffered a hemorrhagic stroke leading to brain death. The University Medical Center (UMC) in Astana successfully conducted organ transplant surgeries utilizing the donor’s organs, with her family consenting to donate and help save the lives of five individuals.

The transplant surgeries, which took place at UMC clinics, included a heart transplant for a 43-year-old patient who was previously supported by an LVAD mechanical circulatory device at the UMC’s Heart Center. Additionally, a lung transplant and a kidney transplant for a 15-year-old girl were carried out, with all recipients currently undergoing rehabilitation and in stable condition under the care of medical specialists.

Furthermore, the remaining kidney and liver from the same donor were transplanted to patients at the National Research Oncology Center (NROC) in Astana, highlighting the collaborative efforts among medical institutions to facilitate life-saving procedures.

UMC emphasized the complexity of organ transplantation operations but praised the experience, skills, and technical equipment that enable high-quality surgeries in the country. Heart and lung transplants are only carried out from posthumous donors with confirmed brain death, with the decision to donate ultimately resting with the donor’s close relatives.

The UMC expressed gratitude to the donor’s family, transplant coordinators, and medical teams from various hospitals for their support. Special recognition was given to the patrol police battalion of Kokshetau city and local police services for providing transport support and ensuring timely transportation of the donor organs, crucial for successful transplant procedures.
