UN Adopts Turkmenistan’s Energy and Transport Resolutions
The United Nations General Assembly has recently adopted two resolutions initiated by Turkmenistan on energy and transport. These resolutions, titled “The key role of reliable and stable energy connectivity in ensuring sustainable development” and “Strengthening links between all modes of transport to achieve Sustainable Development Goals,” were co-sponsored by 38 and 47 member states, respectively.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the energy resolution emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in ensuring reliable and stable energy connectivity at national, regional, and global levels. It aims to promote economic integration and sustainable development, as well as ensure access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy sources for all. Turkmenistan has also proposed an international meeting of experts in early 2024 to discuss strategies and development of cooperation in the field of energy connectivity and mobility of energy resources.
The transport resolution focuses on supporting the continuous operation and strengthening of the transport system and infrastructure in all aspects of sustainable development. Turkmenistan has been actively involved in creating effective international platforms for dialogue in this area, including hosting the 1st UN Global Conference on Sustainable Transport in 2016 and the Conference of Ministers of Transport of Landlocked Developing Countries in cooperation with the United Nations in 2022.
Both resolutions demonstrate Turkmenistan’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and international cooperation in the fields of energy and transport. As the resolutions were adopted with the support of numerous member states, it is clear that there is a strong global consensus on the need to address these critical issues.
The adoption of these resolutions marks an important step towards achieving sustainable development goals and ensuring reliable and sustainable energy and transport connectivity on a global scale.
