UN Commissioner Turk Reports 5,280 Civilians Killed in Myanmar Since 2021

The situation in Myanmar continues to deteriorate, with human rights violations on the rise and the army resorting to increasingly extreme measures. Speaking at the 56th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, UN Commissioner Turk highlighted the atrocities being committed in the country.
Turk pointed out that the Myanmar army has lost control over the region, leading to compulsory military service, indiscriminate bombing of towns and villages, and brutal acts against civilians. Thousands of Rohingya youth have been forcibly recruited into military service, further exacerbating the crisis.
The Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are living in dire conditions, with no hope of a permanent solution. The army has killed thousands of civilians since February 2021, and many more have been detained. Ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims has been ongoing, with the UN and international organizations labeling it as genocide.
The military coup in Myanmar in February 2021 has only added to the country’s woes, with hundreds of protesters killed and thousands detained. Large-scale demonstrations continue across the country, as the international community calls for an end to the violence and for humanitarian aid to be provided to those in need.
Turk urged all parties to prevent the repetition of the atrocities committed against the Rohingya in the past and called for international protection and support for those fleeing violence in Myanmar. The international community must keep the difficulties faced by the people of Myanmar on the agenda and work towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
