UN Presence on Island for 60 Years Without Agreement with Locals – BRTK

UBP Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu Criticizes UN Security Council Resolution on Cyprus Issue
Secretary General of the National Unity Party and Famagusta Deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu recently spoke out against the United Nations Security Council resolution number 186, which was dated March 4, 1964. This resolution, which marked its 60th anniversary this year, has been a point of contention in the ongoing Cyprus Problem.
Hasipoğlu highlighted the fact that for the past 60 years, the UN has been present on the island without reaching a satisfactory agreement with the Turkish Cypriots. He emphasized that the UN has been supporting the occupied Republic of Cyprus, maintaining the status quo that has perpetuated the deadlock in negotiations.
The decision No. 186, according to Hasipoğlu, recognized the Republic of Cyprus as the sole legitimate entity on the island, effectively sidelining the sovereign rights of the Turkish Cypriots. He argued that this outdated decision has hindered progress and favored the Greek side in Cyprus, creating a comfort zone for them.
Hasipoğlu called for a revision of the resolution in light of the current realities on the island. He stressed that the Turkish Cypriots deserve equal sovereignty and international recognition. Referring to recent developments in the diplomatic arena, Hasipoğlu mentioned President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s emphasis on the demand for sovereign equality, signaling a united front between Turkey and the TRNC.
Looking ahead, Hasipoğlu expressed optimism that the obstacles created by decision No. 186 will be gradually overcome, allowing the Turkish Cypriots and TRNC to strengthen their ties with the international community. He underscored the need for a concerted effort to address the longstanding issues surrounding the Cyprus Problem and move towards a fair and lasting resolution.
