UN Reports Nearly 1 Million Syrian Camp Residents to Return Home
Celine Schmitt, spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, recently shared important data concerning displaced individuals in northwest Syria during a weekly press conference at the UN Geneva Office.
According to Schmitt, nearly 1 million people currently reside in camps in northwest Syria, with an additional 600,000 individuals expected to return to their homes within the next six months. She stressed the importance of ensuring that these individuals have access to humanitarian aid, employment opportunities, sustainable livelihoods, and basic services in order to facilitate a smooth transition back to their communities.
Schmitt highlighted the common emotional desire among respondents to return home, but emphasized the need for ongoing support to rebuild Syria’s economy and infrastructure. She noted that the country is at a crucial turning point following years of conflict, with 90 percent of the population requiring assistance to recover and rebuild.
In light of recent developments, Schmitt expressed optimism about the possibilities for progress in Syria post-Assad regime, and urged the international community to step up and provide the necessary long-term support to meet the needs of those affected by the crisis.
