UN Secretary-General condemns Israel’s ban on UNRWA operations

UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, is facing challenges and threats in fulfilling its duty to provide assistance to Palestinian refugees in the occupied Palestinian territories. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over two laws recently passed by the Israeli Parliament that could hinder UNRWA’s operations in the region.
Guterres emphasized the vital role of UNRWA in providing aid to Palestinian refugees and stressed that there is no alternative to the agency. He warned that the implementation of these laws could have devastating consequences for Palestinian refugees and called on Israel to fulfill its obligations in accordance with international law and humanitarian law.
The Israeli Parliament’s approval of a bill to end UNRWA’s activities in Israel is part of a broader campaign by the Israeli administration to discredit and close the agency. The campaign intensified following attacks on the Gaza Strip, with Israel accusing UNRWA employees of involvement in the violence.
Despite facing challenges and threats, UNRWA continues to provide essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees in the region. Guterres has vowed to bring the issue to the attention of the UN General Assembly and keep member states informed of the situation.
As the situation in the region remains precarious, it is crucial for international organizations like UNRWA to be able to operate effectively and ensure the well-being of Palestinian refugees. The international community must support UNRWA’s efforts to provide assistance and support to those in need in the region.
