UN Secretary-General Guterres Sends Support Message to UNIFIL Staff
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his admiration and gratitude towards the staff of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in a recent video message.
In his message, Guterres emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of UN personnel, stating that it is a top priority for the organization. He also stressed that all parties are obligated to protect UN personnel and facilities, declaring that attacks against UN peacekeepers are completely unacceptable.
Furthermore, Guterres highlighted that such attacks not only violate international law and international humanitarian law but also have the potential to constitute a war crime. Despite facing numerous challenges, he commended the dedication and resilience of UNIFIL staff in carrying out their duties.
Addressing the UNIFIL personnel directly, Guterres acknowledged their crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in the region, stating, “You are not only working on the Blue Line, you are at the front of the peace line.” The Secretary-General expressed pride in the work of UNIFIL staff and their country, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to global peacekeeping efforts.
