UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Visit Kazakhstan, Highlighting Commitment to Multilateralism

ASTANA – The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to visit Kazakhstan on July 3-4 as part of his trip to Central Asia. During his visit, Guterres will meet with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, various government officials, and UN staff members in Almaty and Astana.

This marks Guterres’s second official visit to Kazakhstan, the first being in 2017. He will also attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and deliver remarks at the SCO Plus session in the Kazakh capital on July 4.

The UN press service stated that Guterres will emphasize the importance of reaffirming a shared commitment to multilateralism based on the UN Charter, international law, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He will highlight the need for peace as the central goal of the multilateral system and address the global divisions hindering cooperation on issues such as climate change and digital technologies.

“We are honored to welcome the UN Secretary-General to Kazakhstan for his second official visit, reflecting Kazakhstan’s steadfast commitment to UN principles and goals,” said UN Resident Coordinator in Kazakhstan Michaela Friberg-Storey. Kazakhstan has actively engaged with the UN since its independence, demonstrating its dedication to global peace, security, and sustainable development.

The UN’s initiatives in Kazakhstan encompass a range of areas, including education, healthcare, gender equality, economic rights, and human rights. In 2023, the UN, along with its partners, provided $33.3 million in assistance to Kazakhstan.

Guterres’s visit is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s partnership with the UN and highlight the country’s advocacy for multilateralism and inclusive society building.
