Unbelievable Treasure: My Grandfather’s 1,750 Yellow Lira Purchase

‘Domed Grocery Store’, a historic landmark in the Menemen district of Izmir, has been proudly standing for over a century. The unique domed building, originally built as an almshouse for the tomb 600 years ago, has a rich history of serving the community in various forms.
Initially used by an Armenian pharmacist, the building later transformed into a soup kitchen, candy store, and eventually into a grocery store by Hüseyin Ayla. Today, the third-generation owner, 67-year-old Ali Haydar Ayla, continues to run the family business and carry on the legacy of the historic store.
What sets this grocery store apart is not only its unique domed structure but also the antique items found inside. From scissors dating back to 1871 to a scale with 90 years of history, customers are greeted with a nostalgic atmosphere as they browse through the products on shelves and walls.
Ali Haydar Ayla takes great pride in preserving the store’s original charm, stating that his grandfather purchased the shop for 1,750 yellow liras. Despite being an Industrial Engineer by profession, Ayla remains dedicated to maintaining the store’s nostalgic appeal, ensuring that customers feel a sense of nostalgia with each visit.
As the sole successor of the Ayla family business, Ali Haydar Ayla acknowledges that there will be no one to carry on the legacy after him. However, he remains committed to meeting customer demands and providing a unique shopping experience. Customers, like 80-year-old Ali Yeşilçimen and 76-year-old Günay Şengönül, continue to frequent the store for its unmatched collection of products and old-world charm.
With a commitment to tradition and customer satisfaction, ‘Domed Grocery Store’ stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Menemen, offering a glimpse into the past while serving the community in the present.
