Underground Dam and Ponds Bring Water to Thousands of Hectares of Land

DSI Launches Construction of Ponds and Underground Dam for Agricultural Irrigation
The State Hydraulic Works (DSI) has initiated the construction of ponds and an underground dam for the irrigation of agricultural areas, protection, development of water resources, and transfer to future generations. The construction of the underground dam, along with 8 irrigation ponds, has already resulted in the irrigation of 2 thousand 180 hectares of agricultural land.
The aim of these projects is to channel, creek, and stream deposits to prevent breeding of floods and floods in the city while increasing agricultural areas. Plans are in place to construct an additional 10 irrigation ponds and one more underground dam to further enhance water resources for agriculture.
With these projects, efforts are being made to prevent losses in underground water resources due to drought and climate change, with the goal of irrigating more agricultural land.
According to DSI 17. Regional Director Cihan Aksoy, in the last 22 years, 8 ponds have been completed and put into service in Van. Construction works for 10 ponds are currently ongoing, with Hentane and Gültepe ponds leading in terms of progress. Aksoy mentioned that the Median pond is at 80 percent body occupancy, while Gültepe Pond is at a 40 percent level. Construction of these two ponds is planned to be completed by 2025, resulting in more irrigation capabilities.
Aksoy highlighted that each ongoing pond has the capacity to irrigate anywhere from 60 to 400-500 hectares of land, with plans for a total of 10 ponds to be constructed. Additionally, the completion of the Van Irgat 1 underground dam last year has already led to the irrigation of 80 hectares of land. Work on the Van Ragat 2 Underground Dam project is currently in progress, with a construction tender planned upon project completion.
In conclusion, these projects are not only bringing water to waterless soils but also contributing to the sustainable development of agricultural areas in Van and ensuring water resources for future generations.
