Understanding the Equinox: Dates and Significance in Turkey

The Equinox: A Celestial Event of Equal Day and Night

Twice a year, the world experiences an astronomical event known as the equinox. The vernal equinox, also called the spring equinox, marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, while the autumnal equinox, also called the autumn equinox, marks the first day of autumn.

These equinoxes occur due to the Earth’s spherical shape, tilted axis, and its yearly motion around the Sun. As a result of these conditions and events, the equinoxes take place between March 19-21 and September 20-24 each year.

The word “equinox” originates from the Latin aequinoctium, which means “equal night.” During the equinox, day and night are approximately equal length all around the globe. This phenomenon occurs when the equinox circle passes through the poles, causing the Sun to illuminate both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere equally.

On September 23, the Sun’s rays fall perpendicular to the Equator, with a shadow length of zero at this point. From this date onwards, days in the Southern Hemisphere start to become longer than nights, while the opposite occurs in the Northern Hemisphere. This marks the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere and autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox dates also signify the start of six months of continuous day at the South Pole and six months of continuous night at the North Pole.

On March 21, a similar phenomenon occurs with the Sun’s rays falling perpendicularly to the Northern Hemisphere. The length of nights in the Southern Hemisphere starts to surpass days, while the opposite is true for the Northern Hemisphere. This marks the beginning of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Just like the September equinox, the circle of illumination passes tangentially to the poles on this date.

The equinox is a fascinating celestial event that demonstrates the balance in nature and the changing seasons on our planet. It serves as a reminder of the intricate workings of our Earth and its relationship with the Sun.
