Unemployment Rate Remains in Single Digits Despite Increase Below OVP Estimate
Vice President Yilmaz Reviews Labor Force Statistics for June
Vice President Yilmaz recently took to his social media account to comment on the Turkish Statistical Institute’s (TUIK) labor force statistics for June. In his statement, Yilmaz noted that the unemployment rate had increased to 9.2 percent during the mentioned month. Despite this rise, he pointed out that the unemployment rate remained in single digits, staying below the OVP estimate of 10.3 percent for 2024.
Yilmaz explained that alongside the tightening policies aimed at combating inflation, there were also temporary factors contributing to the increase in June’s unemployment rate. These included the influx of job seekers during the school holidays and the 9-day Eid al-Adha holiday.
“Our aim is to grow in a stable and balanced manner and to improve our employment opportunities,” Vice President Yilmaz emphasized in his statement. He highlighted ongoing efforts to manage the disinflation process while monitoring its impact on growth and employment. The government is deploying selective credits, offering incentives for real sector investments, implementing regulations to enhance the investment environment, and promoting favorable tax rates and financing conditions to boost exports.
Moreover, vocational training programs and labor policies are being put in place to enhance employability and create more job opportunities. Yilmaz stressed that the overarching goal is to achieve stable and balanced growth, improve employment prospects, and enhance overall social welfare through human-centered and inclusive development.
While acknowledging the challenges of striking a balance between combating inflation and fostering growth, Yilmaz asserted that these objectives are aligned in the medium and long term. Price stability plays a crucial role in bolstering predictability and trust within the economy, laying a solid foundation for sustained growth over time. Ultimately, the government aims to create an environment conducive to sustainable development and prosperity for all.
