Unions Urge Immediate Implementation of Tax Regulation – BRTK

Turkish Union Leaders Demand Tax Reforms from Government

Several prominent union leaders in Northern Cyprus came together to demand changes in the annual income tax base brackets that will take effect on January 1, 2025. The Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union, Turkish Cypriot Public Servants’ Union, Public Workers’ Union, Turkish Cypriot Public Servants’ Union, and Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education and Teachers’ Union gathered in front of the Ministry of Finance to make their voices heard.

KTÖS Secretary General Burak Maviş stressed the importance of rearranging the tax brackets to ensure that employees are not burdened with excessive taxes. KTOEÖS President Selma Eylem criticized the government for its failure to implement necessary tax regulations, warning that the country is at risk of impoverishment if changes are not made.

KTAMS President Güven Bengihan highlighted the significance of the tax bases for workers and called for calculations to be based on the minimum wage. KAMU-SEN President Metin Atan expressed concerns about the country’s governance and urged unity and solidarity among the unions.

Following their statements, union representatives met with Minister of Finance Özdemir Berova, although no official statement was released to the press after the meeting. The unions are continuing to push for reforms and are calling on the government to address their concerns before it’s too late.
