United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture to Visit Mongolia
Representatives of the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture are set to visit Mongolia from May 5-16. Their main objective during this visit is to assess the implementation of the recommendations made during their previous visit in 2017.
Following their initial visit, the Mongolian government took significant steps by establishing a national mechanism for the prevention of torture. This move was crucial in the efforts to combat and prevent torture in the country.
Mongolia ratified “The Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel” (OPCAT) in 2015. As a result, the Subcommittee has the authority to visit and conduct unannounced inspections in all countries that are party to OPCAT. This visit presents an opportunity for the representatives of the Subcommittee to engage with government officials, members of national prevention organizations, representatives of civil society, and other UN agencies.
The visit of the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture highlights Mongolia’s commitment to upholding human rights and preventing torture. It is hoped that the recommendations and assessments made during this visit will further strengthen the country’s efforts in this regard.
