Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has been vocal this week about the impact of the US tariff policy on international trade relations. In phone calls with his British, Austrian, and Swiss counterparts, Wang expressed concern over the trade tensions created by the US tariffs.
During his meeting with British Foreign Minister David Lammy, Wang emphasized the need for China and Britain to stand together against what he referred to as US bullying in the international order. He warned against translating international relations into a law of the jungle, stating that this approach is not sustainable and will face increasing resistance from other countries.
Wang criticized the United States for using tariffs as weapons without regard for the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the interests of other countries. He called for a united front among European countries to defend the multilateral trade system and promote an open global economy.
In discussions with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, Wang urged cooperation in upholding multilateralism and free trade. He stressed the importance of working together to protect the legitimate rights and interests of all countries and maintain the international economic and commercial order.
The recent announcement by US President Donald Trump to impose additional tariffs on trade partners, including China and European countries, has further escalated tensions. China has responded by increasing tariffs on US goods, leading to a tit-for-tat exchange between the two countries.
While the US has postponed additional tariffs on the EU and other partners for 90 days, the tariffs on China have already taken effect. The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation in the ongoing trade dispute.
