Peker, who had been getting gel manicures regularly every three weeks, experienced a severe allergic reaction after her last procedure. Despite diligently applying sunscreen with a high SPF before each session, Peker noticed a slight redness on her hands just two hours after the procedure. Mistakenly attributing it to sunburn due to the sunny weather, she applied moisturizer to soothe the itching. However, when the itching persisted and her hands became swollen, Peker sought medical help.
Doctors in the emergency room diagnosed her with burns and advised her to avoid sunlight for a day while keeping her hands bandaged. To her dismay, when Peker removed the bandages the next day, her hands were even more swollen. She consulted a dermatologist who confirmed that she had an allergic reaction to the burning process. Peker underwent several treatments, including cortisone injections and creams, to control the swelling. Although the swelling subsided within two days, Peker’s ordeal continues, with ongoing treatments and the need to wear gloves whenever she ventures into the sun. She plans to undergo laser lightening treatment for her hands after the summer.
This alarming incident has prompted experts to emphasize the potential risks of permanent nail polish. Dermatology specialist Yasemin Fatih Amato explains that the process requires specialized equipment and a trained nail specialist. The removal of gel nail polish can also be more troublesome and should be done carefully to avoid damaging the nails. Furthermore, the pressure exerted by gel nail polish on the nails can weaken their natural structure.
Dr. Amato warns that permanent nail polish must be applied by a professional, as home application can lead to undesirable consequences. Long-term use may weaken or damage the nails, potentially causing fungal infections. Some individuals may also develop allergic reactions to the chemicals used in permanent nail polish, leading to symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, or skin rash.
