UNRWA Chief: Gaza’s Children Face Starvation

Deepening Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached alarming levels as international calls for aid remain unheeded. In a recent statement on social media, Giuseppe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), underscored the dire conditions faced by the population, particularly children. "Children are starving in Gaza," he lamented while sharing a poignant image of women and children scavenging for food.
Lazzarini criticized the Israeli government’s ongoing blockade, which has restricted the entry of essential food supplies and other necessities into the besieged territory. He described the hunger experienced in Gaza as a "hunger formed by human hand for political reasons," emphasizing the man-made nature of this crisis.
Despite widespread media coverage and urgent calls for humanitarian assistance, Israel has maintained its blockade for nearly two months, severely limiting aid flow and basic needs. The World Food Program (WFP) has declared that food stocks in Gaza are entirely depleted, with the last supplies delivered to kitchen facilities.
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also expressed grave concerns, stating that conditions in Gaza have reached a "terrible and hopeless" stage. The blockage of water and electricity alongside closed border gates has exacerbated the already desperate circumstances facing the Palestinians.
Escalation of Violence
The crisis intensified following the end of a 42-day ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas, leading Israel to halt the entry of humanitarian aid on March 2. Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military’s offensive actions have resulted in significant casualties. Over 51,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, and more than 117,000 have been injured due to sustained bombardments targeting civilian infrastructure and hospitals.
Reports indicate that approximately 2 million people have been displaced amid the ongoing violence in a region with a population of just 2.3 million. Medical facilities are overwhelmed, and the health sector is on the brink of collapse, further complicating the delivery of urgent care to those in need.
As the world observes, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, sparking calls for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. The international community faces increasing pressure to respond and address the unfolding tragedy in Gaza before it descends further into despair.
