Archaeologists Uncover Unique Roman-Era Burial Practices in Hungary
During the excavation of a Roman-era Sarmatian cemetery in Dunavecse, Hungary, approximately seventy graves have been uncovered, revealing unusual burial practices. The excavation was conducted by experts from the Katona József Museum in Kecskemét prior to the expansion of Schneider Electric’s Duna Smart Power Systems (DSPS) factory in the area.
In addition to the graves, archaeologists also discovered buildings, smokehouses, ditches, ovens, wells, and various everyday objects. Among the intriguing artifacts found was a rare Roman board game die, as well as a double burial where a man and a woman were placed together in a shared grave pit—a practice uncommon during that period.
Furthermore, contracted burials and the presence of two large millstones in one grave indicated unique burial rituals, possibly linked to superstitious beliefs. Lead archaeologist Karola Molnár noted the significance of the Dunavecse-Öreghegy archaeological site, highlighting the large number of graves and the opportunity for extensive research in the area.
Distinctive artifacts such as terra sigillata pottery, jewelry, and weapons were also discovered, shedding light on the Sarmatian presence in the Carpathian Basin from the 1st to 5th centuries AD. The ongoing excavation is being carried out in coordination with the construction activities for the factory expansion by Schneider Electric.
The DSPS facility in Dunavecse was inaugurated last May, and plans for further expansion with an investment of EUR 44 million have been announced. The site has also revealed remnants of a Neolithic settlement and traces of a Bronze Age settlement, adding to the rich archaeological history of the area.
As archaeologists continue their work at the site, the buried secrets of the Roman-era Sarmatian cemetery in Dunavecse are gradually being uncovered, providing valuable insights into the past.
