Upcoming Bountiful Sweet Corn Harvest Promises Stable Supply for Markets and Industry
Hungary is gearing up for a strong season of sweet corn production, with ample supply expected for both the processing industry and consumers. A recent survey conducted by the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the FruitVeB Hungarian Interbranch Organization for Fruits and Vegetables indicates positive outlook for the sweet corn sector in the country.
As a major player in global sweet corn production, Hungary is notably competing with leading producers such as China and the United States. The country boasts the largest sweet corn production area in the EU, encompassing 24,000 hectares, of which 90% are equipped with irrigation facilities.
Sweet corn production in Hungary is primarily driven by small farmers cultivating the crop on 0.5-1 hectare plots. Scheduled sowing practices enable a consistent supply of sweet corn from late May to early October, catering to both the fresh market and the canning industry. The flavor of sweet corn, which is influenced by its sugar content, is at its peak during the milk-ripening stage. Over the past decade, super sweet varieties have gained dominance in the market.
Sweet corn is known for its versatility, being consumed as a cooked side dish, a grilled snack, pickled with other vegetables, or as an ingredient in salads. In addition to its fresh form, sweet corn is widely available in canned and frozen varieties. The popularity of pre-cooked vacuum-packed sweet corn is also on the rise among consumers.
With Hungary’s reputation as a key player in sweet corn production on the rise, the upcoming season looks promising for both producers and consumers alike.
