Updated Insurance Requirements for Electric Scooters

Hungary Implements Compulsory Insurance for Electric Scooters and Segways

Hungary is expanding its compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance requirements to include micro-mobility devices such as electric scooters and Segways. The new regulation, set to take effect on July 16, will require vehicles powered by small electric engines to be insured based on their net weight and design speed.

According to the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies (Mabisz), electric scooters weighing more than 25 kilograms or capable of speeds exceeding 25 kilometers per hour must obtain compulsory insurance. Even those weighing less than 25 kilograms but with speeds surpassing 14 kilometers per hour are subject to the same insurance mandate.

Patrik Veres, an advisory expert at Grantis Hungary Zrt., explained that the insurance premiums for electric scooters vary significantly among insurers. While some have already set their rates, others are waiting for the final government decree to finalize their pricing. Annual insurance rates for electric scooters currently range from a few thousand to several hundred thousand forints.

The introduction of these new insurance requirements aims to better regulate the use of electric scooters and micro-mobility devices in Hungary. It is advised that operators of these vehicles ensure compliance with the new regulations to avoid penalties and legal complications.

Overall, the implementation of compulsory insurance for electric scooters and Segways demonstrates Hungary’s commitment to enhancing safety and accountability in the realm of micro-mobility transportation.
