Urgent NATO Summit in Washington: Breaking Update

Turkey and the United States have a complex relationship as allies and strategic partners. Despite being two influential countries with the largest armies in NATO, they have differences on various key issues. One such issue is the US’s support for terrorist organizations, including sheltering FETÖ leader Gülen and providing training and equipment to the YPG/PKK, which threatens stability in the region.
In an effort to address these differences and advance other issues, President Erdoğan and US President Biden decided to establish a strategic mechanism during their bilateral meeting in Brussels in 2021. This led to shuttle diplomacy between Ankara and Washington, resulting in positive developments, such as progress in F-16 sales and trade volume since the beginning of 2024.
Retired Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, a senior diplomat and former US Department of Defense commander, emphasized the importance of the US-Turkey relationship and the recognition of Turkey’s significance by the Biden administration. He also expressed opposition to the US policy of supporting the YPG terrorist organization.
The growing influence of Turkey’s defense industry was highlighted, with Turkey developing its own weapons, including fifth-generation fighter jets and UAVs. General Kimmitt praised Turkey’s defense industry development and its contribution to NATO’s capabilities.
The recent NATO summit in Washington DC provided an opportunity to acknowledge Turkey’s critical role in the alliance, particularly in light of its significant land forces and defense production capabilities. General Kimmitt stressed the importance of resolving issues such as the S-400 missile system to ensure full interoperability among NATO members.
Turkey’s unique ability to engage in peacekeeping, humanitarian operations, and conflict resolution was praised by General Kimmitt, highlighting the Turkish military’s versatility and effectiveness in various missions.
Overall, the relationship between Turkey and the US continues to evolve, with efforts to address differences and enhance cooperation on key issues for the benefit of both countries and NATO as a whole.
